Best known for his 1966 hit song "Knock On Wood" and other songs from the Memphis Soul Music era at STAX Records. He wrote songs for himself and other artists including Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding.
He is a member of the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame, The Alabama Music Hall of Fame and has received other honors throughout his nearly 50 year career in music.

One of the architects of the Stax-Volt sound, and is probably best known for his 1961 debut single, "You Don't Miss Your Water". In 1977, Bell topped Billboard's R&B singles chart with "Tryin' to Love Two". He co-wrote such tunes as “I Forgot to Be Your Lover,” “Private Number,” and “Born Under a Bad Sign,” the title song of an album by guitarist Albert King and a major hit for the British group Cream. Bell was inducted in to the Georgia Music Hall Of Fame in 1997.
